Dear Miss Cleristh / Aunt Cloti,
There’s this guy who’s my friend and I really want to be more than his friend – if you know what I mean – but he’s got this long-term friend who’s also a girl. I’ve heard from several sources that they’re together, but from her own mouth they’ve just known each other a long time and aren’t an item. Seems like open season, right?
The other girl and I get along great, but whenever I try to flirt with him, she starts acting all jealous. She keeps it to herself, but you’d have to be infused with mako cells to not realize that she’s totally in love with the guy. I want to keep being friends with her, but I really want this guy – he’s a sword wielding, spiky-haired ex-soldier who came crashing through the church roof – just my type. What should I do?
~Flower Power Princess
Dear Flower Power Princess,
Did you say that your female friend was jealous when you start flirting with your prospective beau? That’s a good sign – obviously there’s some good vibes between you and spikes-a-lot, or else why would she be jealous of you flirting with him?
Listen Princess, short of the man in question being so preoccupied with something important, like settling his past or saving the world, there ain’t nothing else on his mind other than scorin’ sweet honeys like yourself.
Go after him aggressively – boys eat up the damsel in distress roles; it makes them feel all powerful and manly. Try to figure out a way that he always has to keep his focus on you. Give the rest of the neighbourhood something to talk about, and you’ll start to see steam coming out of the other girl’s ears. Remember: the more jealous she gets, the closer you are to snagging that cutie.
And she can still be your friend – Maid of Honor at your wedding! BAAM!
Remember: Keep your eye on the prize.

Dear Flower Power Princess,
It seems to me you’re more worried about how this other girl reacts than the man in question – how does he respond to your flirting? The way the other girl reacts has no bearing on his feelings.
Men aren’t that complicated – if you’re offering yourself on a platter and he’s not responding, try changing your strategy. It sounds like you want to date this fellow because he’s your ‘type’, and just because you dated one ex-soldier, doesn’t mean this fellow’s going to respond same way as your last sweetheart.
On the other hand, if everyone and the dog are convinced they’ve got something going on: take a step back, and take another look. You say that these two have known each other a long time, so they’ve got a history together that you know nothing about. They might already be a couple that’s done everything but admit it to one another, and you could be an obnoxious third wheel.
As for your female friend – everyone’s a little different. She might just be jealous that you’re able to be so honest about your feelings with him. Be respectful of one another – would you want her going after him after you’ve became a couple?
Your prospective sweetheart should be enough of a man to make it clear which one of you he desires, though he may not use words to do so. Remember the old saying about actions being stronger than words? Show you’re interested, but make sure he’s interested in you, too. Your other friend may not like it at first, but time will heal all wounds. If he picks you, she’ll accept it and move on. If he picks her – it sounds like you’re a lovely young lady and had a good thing going with another guy. Unless he did something horrible to you, why not drop the ex a line, and see if the sparks rekindle?
Tread carefully, and try to see this guy for who he really is, and not some prize to be won,
